Useful Bible Studies > 2 Kings Commentary > chapter 3
A harp is a musical instrument with strings, which a person plays by hand. It was an instrument which God’s people often used to praise God (Psalm 92:1-3).
In 1 Samuel 10:5, there is a reference to its use, with other instruments, by a group of prophets (holy men). They were prophesying – in other words, they were speaking or singing as God’s Spirit directed them. Probably on that occasion, the Holy Spirit was directing them to praise God.
David played the harp for King Saul. At that time, the Spirit of God had powerfully come upon David (1 Samuel 16:13). An evil spirit was disturbing Saul. However, as David played, the evil spirit left Saul (1 Samuel 16:14-23).
Elisha wanted someone to play the harp for him before he declared his message from God. This was not entertainment. Elisha was preparing himself to receive God’s message. The music of the harp would help him to pray and to turn his attention to God. Perhaps Elisha sung to praise God; or perhaps the person who played the harp sang for him (Psalm 147:7). It was usual to sing the Psalms with the harp.
As that person played his harp, the Holy Spirit came powerfully upon Elisha. God gave a message to Elisha for the kings who had come to see him. God declared that he would rescue them from their desperate situation in an extraordinary manner. He would also give them success in their war against Moab.
