King Joash of Judah

2 Kings 12:1

Joash, also called Jehoash, was the son of Ahaziah. He (Joash) was the king of Judah, in other words, southern Israel. At the time of his death, a different king who had the same name, was ruling northern and central Israel. That other king was Joash or Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz, from the family of Jehu.

King Joash of Judah became king at a younger age than any other king in the Bible. He was only 7 years old. However, he ruled well for most of his life. His rule lasted for 40 years. That is as long as David’s rule, or Solomon’s rule.

The author of 2 Kings is careful to record the name of Joash’s mother. The mother of a king received great honour in Israel (1 Kings 2:19-20; see Exodus 20:12). However, Joash’s mother, Zibiah, probably died when Athaliah killed the rest of her family (11:1).

Zibiah came from Beersheba, the town that was furthest south in Judah. She had married King Ahaziah, who was the son of Athaliah. Their marriage was very short; Ahaziah died at 23 years old.
