All things depend on Christ

Colossians 1:17

In our studies of science, we discover that everything operates by certain natural rules or principles. We often call those principles ‘the laws of science’, because they operate strictly, like human laws. However, there is an important difference. In human society, laws can only operate because of the power of governments, police and the court system. In science however, we see nothing that controls its laws, except for other laws of science.

An unbeliever may ask for no further explanation. However, for a Christian, the explanation is clear. God, who created all things, is constantly at work in our world (John 5:17). Everything constantly depends on him (Acts 17:28).

As God made the laws of science so he causes everything to obey those laws (Job chapter 38). However, he is still God, so those laws do not control his actions. God can act in any way that pleases him – however, he will never act in a way that is against his perfect character (Exodus 34:6-7) or his Word (Psalm 119:89).

There is one God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christ is God the Son. Therefore, because God does these things, Christ is doing these things. In John 8:58, Christ himself says that he existed before Abraham. Abraham lived almost 2000 years before Christ was born in Bethlehem. In fact, the Bible teaches that, with God the Father and the Holy Spirit, Christ created all things (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16). In the future age, his rule over all things will be complete. So at the present time, all things depend on Christ. Without Christ, no person could remain alive, even for a moment. The laws of science can only operate because Christ causes them to operate.

Next part: Christ is the ruler of the new creation, his 'church' (Colossians 1:18)
